The 2010 MapInfo Professional® Tips ‘n’ Tricks Contest
Submit your idea of a tip or a trick or a shortcut for MapInfo Professional software and you could win $500!
We want you to help us with some of the content for Insights 2010. We’ll take your submitted ideas and present them during the Location Intelligence Forum at the conference.
If you’re a MapInfo Professional user, we would like to hear from you. It doesn’t matter what your experience level is with the product. If you have an idea that you’d like to share, submit it for a chance to win! It can be a tip or a trick or a shortcut or just something that you do that you think others would like to know about.
You can enter via the Zoomerang link below, anytime between now and May 11, 2010. Submit as many tips as you like, but there will only be one contest entry per person.

Before the conference is over on May 14, we will randomly select 1 lucky person who has submitted a tip to win $500. And once the conference is over, we’ll distribute all the tips to everyone who has entered.
Need some ideas? Here are a few to get you started:
- You can use Layer Control in MapInfo Professional version 10 to rename a window quickly an easily. Instead of the title of the window listing the names of the files you have open, change it to something that makes more sense. Inside of Layer Control, right-click on the name of the map window you wish to change and choose Rename. Type in a new name and click enter. The name will be reflected in the title bar of the map window.
- If you have two polygons that overlap, and you need to figure out the area of just the overlap, there’s a quick way to find it. Choose an editable layer and select both polygons. Go to the Objects menu and choose Check Regions. Select Detect Overlaps and click OK. The area of overlap will be drawn as a separate polygon on the editable layer. Double-click it to get the area.
- You can copy and paste any selection to a Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheet. Even if you just see the map and you have a number of map objects selected, when you copy and paste, all of the tabular data (except the column headings) will be pasted into the spreadsheet.
